Grand Daddy
“I slowly wake up, and realize I spent the night in an airstream caravan on top of a hotel in Cape Town. The Grand Daddy. How awesome is that?”
There’s nothing ordinary about going all the way to the United States of America to source seven vintage Airstream trailers, and then hauling them back across the Atlantic and hoisting them onto the roof of an urban hotel. Then again, there’s nothing ordinary about the Grand Daddy and that is exactly what they did.
I take Daddy’s vintage elevator to their rooftop location in famous Long Street and soak in the alluring outline of Table Mountain as reflected in the polished aluminium of my own trailer for the night. The seven recently renovated trailers, complete with US Postal Service mailboxes, all have their own individual decor and style, and collectively they reflect the “South African road trip”. Yep, those unmistakably South African vistas have climbed right into the trailers. Each one is as unique as the South African landscape that it encapsulates and each has a story to share. And yes, they do have hotel rooms too, but the true boho stays in one of these babies.
