“Visiting these villages during the Adhong Village Tour makes you think about your own life twice.”

After visiting the magnificent Borobudur we had some spare time left. We decided that we wanted to see more of the local life and the beautiful surroundings. Our tour guide suggested the Andhong village tour: a tour that takes you to local villages by horse carriage. There are different tours to choose from and different villages to visit (you can book them at your hotel). We went to a pottery village, but there are also cassave villages and tofu villages nearby.

Visiting these small villages was terrible and amazing at the same time. Amazing because you’ll get to see the real country life from Indonesia. Although the people are very poor, they take good care of their little village. It’s interesting to see their social life and how much their life is different than yours. On the other hand it was terrible because I never felt more like a privileged girl and a tourist than in this little town. It felt rude to take pictures of the people, so I only photographed the buildings and surroundings. When we asked our tour guide what the local people thought of the tourists visiting, she told us the village had an arrangement with tourist organizations and people can only visit selected villages. It’s one of their main incomes and is the backbone of the village. It still felt strange, but most villagers seemed happy with our visit and waved at us every time we passed by.

Although I had mixed feelings during this tour, I would still recommend doing it. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience local life and visiting these towns makes you think about your own life twice.
