Familie Buitenhuys | On The Lake #7
“Imagine watching perfect Dutch meadow views from your own greenhouse with wood stove, attached to a perfect holiday home in itself. Indeed, so unique! It was a bliss staying at this holiday home. You can even sleep inside the glasshouse: a fantastic experience!”
I’ve said it before as I have stayed in another beautiful Familie Buitenhuys holiday home (#20: check it out here!) and I will say it again: I am in LOVE with their holiday homes. It is so easy to fall in love with them as they’re so unique and quirky and the views over the meadows are unbeatable. Holland at its purest! I’ve stayed at house no. 7 and wow, it took my breathe away!
Imagine falling for these Dutch views from your own greenhouse with wood stove, simply attached to a perfect holiday home in itself. Indeed, it’s so unique! It was a bliss staying at this greenhouse holiday home when Spring kicked in: hello sunshine, hello perfect place. In Dutch I would say it’s a Kashuis, something I have dreamt about myself for years and years. Mariëlle just made that (and her!) dream come true by just building it. Wow!
Their self-designed, quite new (feb 2020) countryside getaway is a 45 min drive from Amsterdam, in the middle of nowhere. From the house you overlook the fields and dyke that surround the Markermeer: Holland in its purest form!
The house is focused on a level of comfort but with fun, quirky details and a playful layout. It is is thoughtfully placed on 300m2 private land, carefully designed & build around existing bushes and trees. There’s a creek between the house and the field and there are trees and bushes around the lawn which surrounds the house and give a level of privacy.
The house has been designed with a creative open space plan. Upon entering, you will arrive in a hallway and there’s an open & light living room and kitchen space. There are big garden doors to let the light, the sun and the view inside. The lounge area can become a bed too.
There is a master bedroom and a unique bathroom (just open the doors of the shower and toilet and see for yourself! It took us a day to find this out hahaha!). There is a second toilet too. So there is one bedroom inside the house but the glasshouse has a bed and a private washbasin too, so you’re actually able to sleep in the greenhouse! The greenhouse has a fire place to stay warm (and cozy!) in the colder winter months.
As they mention themselves: do not expect a clean-cut sterile design-y resort villa, but a holiday home that has a personal touch and feel to it, it has “stuff” (books, toys, vases, plants….). Personally, I love and prefer this “at home”-like atmosphere. There is nature everywhere and you’re able to walk for hours along the lake, through the meadows and rolling farmland. There are a few charming villages and farmhouses nearby and if you like, it’s just about a 45 minutes drive from Amsterdam! The many beaches on the endless Dutch coastline are within easy reach too.
Curious for more? Mariëlle and Tobias own four houses in total and they are still expanding! It all started with a dream and building their first house helped Mariëlle through a tough time. Her story is so inspiring! And she definitely has an eye for interior design: all of them have different quirky and creative interiors, a unique vibe and are all of them are very child friendly. Three of their houses are situated in the meadows at the Markermeer lake in Venhuizen (North Holland) and one is in Schaijk in the south of The Netherlands.
