I couldn’t wait to explore Milford Sound, but I was a bit afraid that it would be too busy for me. I always hate touristic points of interest, no matter how beautiful the place is – being surrounded by thousands of tourists (or boats and the people on them in this case) ruins it for me. Therefore, I looked for a special and different way to explore Milford Sound in New Zealand and I discovered Fiordland Discovery. What an experience this was!
Milford Sound is simply like no other place on Earth. With majestic peaks that tower hundreds of meters both above and below sea level, cascading waterfalls and pristine rainforest, it’s undoubtedly the most spectacular of New Zealand’s thirteen fiords. The Fiordland natural wildlife here is abundant! We saw seals, dolphins and penguins. It was beautiful. My personal highlight was being allowed to jump in a kayak right before sunset, exploring Milford Sound by my own. Woa! I even saw a seal from up close. And that sunset? No words needed.
I couldn’t have made a better decision than to go for this luxurious overnight stay on their Jewel boat. I loved the fact that Fiordland Discovery only allow a maximum of 18 persons (9 rooms) on their luxurious vessel and that it leaves the harbor right when all touristic mid-day boats get back. And did I mention the delicious food they serve (fresh lobster!)? Being a vegetarian, I was surprised by the lovely three course dinner the chef served me, while everyone else was enjoying their lobster. Perfect!
Other amazing highlights of the Fiordland Discovery Jewel: helicopter access directly onto the vessel, an on-deck hot-tub, ROV underwater explorations, water activities such as kayaking or zodiak excursions and land expeditions. They have 9 luxury sleeping cabins on board, all with their own private en suite bathrooms.
